Adjuvant Chemotherapy

Adjuvant chemotherapy is a specialized form of cancer combating treatment that is administered when it is suspected that the cancerous cells have spread outside of the original location. Adjuvant chemotherapy TreatmentThis type of treatment is particularly beneficial for combating against various cancers like breast cancer, ovarian cancer, testicular cancer, and few others. It is really very confusing to detect cancerous cells, since these are very small in size, for instance, 1,000 cancerous cells can be compacted into 0.1mm size. In fact, even when doctors diagnose the presence of cancerous cells in a particular location, likelihood is there that some other cancerous cells are simply hiding from the sights of the doctors or surgeons.

Post Surgical Detection
Following a surgical intervention, a patient needs to undergo various clinical tests. Typically an assumption is made if the test results exhibit negative then there is no virtually presence of cancerous cells. However, unfortunately, when the test results show negative, it means that there is no detectable trace for cancerous cells. Since the size of the cancerous cells is so microscopic, likelihood is there that a majority of them may simply hide themselves from the sight of the detection tests.

Now the question is: does that imply that cancers are incurable by surgical intervention or radiation therapy? That every cancer patients are vulnerable with their ‘hidden’ and ‘tiny’ cancerous cells and waiting for a massive and life-threatening strike once again? The answer is no. There are some people who are at risk of hidden cancerous cells and those are the people who receive benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy.

Post Surgical Treatment
People who are suspected having hidden cancerous cells undergo through adjuvant chemotherapy treatment. In this type of treatment, the drugs used under adjuvant chemotherapy are believed to destroy the left-over cancerous cells in the body. This treatment is done in different lines or series. When the presence of the hidden form of cancerous cells is suspected, first line of drugs is administered. If the treatment has turned out to be unsuccessful, then the second line is implemented. However, if second line also fails, unfortunately there is a very little possibility to cure in further treatments. This condition is too prevalent for the patients suffering from breast cancer, prostate cancer, bowel cancer or lung cancer. However, this treatment may offer benefit in few less common cancers such as cancer after bone marrow transplantation.

Following the adjuvant therapy, many patients become confused about recognizing the symptoms and how they look for it. Since they are in any way healthy individuals, it is better to understand that all unusual coughs, colds, flues, and pains will also affect them like these do to anyone else on the surface of earth. If their cancer strikes back, then these symptoms simply do not go away and stay for an unusual period of time. Although adjuvant therapy comes with no guarantee tag with it, many patients still get the benefit of longer life that actually outweighs the risks of side effects.
