Angiosarcoma Chemotherapy
Angiosarcoma chemotherapy is used to treat Angiosarcoma, which a very rare type of cancer of blood vessels. Although high grade angiosarcomas can occur in any part of body, the most common sites where they are likely to occur are head and neck region, bones, breast and other vital organs o of the body like the liver and the spleen. There are several low grade angiosarcomas that can occur in patients. After the treatment, they might recur; but this depends on the stage of cancer that was treated. They have a tendency to spread to the surrounding lymph nodes than as compared to other types of sarcomas like leiomyosarcoma. Because of the aggressive nature of the disease, it becomes difficult to treat the disease. All patients do not well to chemotherapy treatment.
Surgery is the first option for first stage of the cancer. It can be combined with chemotherapy and in rare occasions with radiotherapy. The treatment depends on the location of the cancer. In some cases, the doctors opt to inject the chemotherapy drugs directly into the tumor. The oncologists decide the course of the treatment, including whether chemotherapy should be given before or after the surgery. As angiosarcoma is a variable type of cancer and can occur anywhere in the body, the treatment is usually individualized according to the need of the patients. Patients who cannot undergo surgery usually benefit from a combination of treatment of chemotherapy and radiation.
Radiotherapy is often combined with surgery in order to detect the cancer cells at microscopic level. At cellular levels, the disease is very difficult to detect because the tumor spreads irregularly.
The researchers are trying to find out more drugs and treatment options to cure this cancer, especially in the advanced stages. Paclitaxel, Sorafenib, doxorubicin, ifosfamide, gemcitabine and taxanes have proved quite effective to stop the rapid growth of the tumor. Chemotherapy combined with radiotherapy has also proved very helpful. Paclitaxel has proved beneficial to cure cutaneous angiosarcoma that occurs on the face and the scalp. Paclitaxel and Sorafenib are angiogenesis inhibitors that do not let the new blood vessels to grow, thereby preventing the further growth of tumor. They also help chemotherapy to be more effective.
There are many side effects of angiosarcoma chemotherapy treatment; the patients usually experience a lot of fatigue, dizziness, and breathing difficulties while taking the chemotherapy. They also avoid eating because of nausea and vomiting. In order to manage these side effects, they may opt herbal chemotherapy after consulting their oncologist.
There are very few symptoms of angiosarcoma and so is quite difficult to diagnose at an early stage. By the time the disease is detected, the damage is already done as the cancer already in its advanced stages. Doctors usually look for the symptoms such as anemia less count of red blood cells, fatigue, swelling under the skin, bone pain or skin lesions in order to detect angiosarcoma.
The advanced stages of angiosarcoma related to the skin, the bone or the surrounding tissues are easier to diagnose. Patients suffering from angiosarcoma of the skin develop large lesions at the tumor site which is very easy to diagnose. There is frequent pain on the site and also significant discharge of blood, lymph or other fluids. Angiosarcoma that are caused internally are difficult to diagnose but they grow into large tumors very fast. Unfortunately the treatment proves ineffective after the tumor is diagnosed at a later stage. The trials are going on to treat this cancer in the advanced stages by way of using angiosarcoma chemotherapy. Before undergoing the treatment, the doctors must ensure that patients are prepared for chemotherapy, which would include conducting blood tests and carefully clearing all the doubts of the patients.
