Chemotherapy and MS
Chemotherapy and MS can now come together; a cancer like chemotherapy could treat many forms of mental disorders. Multiple sclerosis is a depletion of the myelin sheath that covers our nerve cells. Multiple Sclerosis affects the nerve cells in our brain and spinal cord. Lack of myelin sheath could interfere with the process of nerve conduction. There occurs a delay of nerve impulse between brain and the body resulting into symptoms like:
- Disturbed Vision
- Weak Muscles
- Troubled coordination and balance
- Feeling of numbness and tinkling in palms and feet
- Thinking and memory defects
Multiple Sclerosis is more likely to affect women than men. The probability further increases in women between 20-40 years of age. Though MS is not chronic occasionally people may lose the ability to read and write.
Chemotherapy has been proved overwhelmingly successful to cure Multiple Sclerosis. The drugs like cyclophosphamide or Cytoxan has been shown to stop MS from progressing. Another drug Novantrone is very successful to cure Multiple Sclerosis. This drug is given intravenously in cycles over a period of few months. Novantrone could also be administered to cure the acute cases of Leukemia and Prostate Cancer.
Chemotherapy whether given to cure cancer or Multiple Sclerosis are infused into the veins thus directly reaching the blood stream. In the process of treatment chemotherapy drugs often fail to make out between a cancer cell and a normal cell which tend to divide continually. Some common side effects of chemotherapy are:
- Alopecia or hair loss: Alopecia is caused by a rupture of hair follicle cells under the influence of chemotherapy drugs
- Anemia: Low RBC count in body is called anemia. Anemia is generally evident with breathlessness, fatigue, pale appearance and air hunger
- Neutropenia: WBC cells are the work horses of our body. These guard us against any infection. Lowering in the amount of WBC Count in the body causes Neutropenia, it predisposes our body even to a mile infection
- Bruising and bleeding: Blood platelets in our body are accountable for blood clotting. The disruption of bone marrow cells cause less formation of blood platelets which could lead to uncontrolled bleeding even by a minor cut
- Diarrhea: The ruptured gastrointestinal cells might impair the digestive functioning thereby resulting in diarrhea like condition
- Nausea and Vomiting: Nausea and vomiting is a prevalent side reaction to chemotherapy drugs. This could be suppressed by taking some anti emetic or anti sickness drugs
