Chemotherapy Clinical Trials

Chemotherapy clinical trials are done on a regular basis to find the best possible treatments for cancer patients. These trials are usually done keeping in mind the current drugs available to cure a particular cancer and how can it be made better with the advent of new drugs. The studies are usually based on new drugs or combining different drugs or even increasing the dosage to attain maximum results. The main goal of these clinical trials is to find better ways to help cancer patients cope with the disease as well as eradicate it completely.

On a number of occasions, cancer patients are asked to take part in these clinical trials by their doctors or nurses. These trials, in some cases, might be risky but the patients are under observation round the clock. In case if something goes wrong, it can be corrected immediately as, patients can be brought to normal by reverting to the regular medications and the chemotherapy doses. The positive aspect of clinical trial is that in some cases, the disease might be cured very soon than expected, but since it is a trial and error scenario, the damage can be irreparable in some rare cases. Chemotherapy success rates are also obtained from chemotherapy clinical trials.

Some patients themselves suggest participating in clinical trials because of the benefits. One needs to make sure that you check the following factors before you agree for clinical trials:

  • Advantages: The advantages and benefits from the trial need to be thoroughly looked at by the patients. Although all clinical trials offer good quality cancer care treatments, the patients need to find out how the trial would help to cure the disease. If you are the first person to get a new drug or treatment, you need to know how the drug would help you or others and what are its advantages.
  • Problems areas:The new treatments do not always give positive results. Even if the treatment is good, there is a possibility that the treatment might not work very well for you. The risk factor although is more with new treatments, one cannot guarantee positive results with the regular treatments as well. The problem areas should always be borne in mind whenever you are going for any treatments related to chemotherapy.
  • Cost of treatment: New treatments or treatments under clinical trial are expensive most of the time than the regular treatments because of the use of new advanced drugs used for the treatment. It is suggested to check the cost of chemotherapy before opting for it. In many cases, the insurance companies do not cover the expenses for treatment under clinical trials. Before you agree for the treatment, you need to check with your insurance company to make sure that they would bear the expenses.
