Chemotherapy Doses
Chemotherapy doses are often given in high quantity to kill all the cancer cells and protect the cancer patients from their rapid growth of cancer cells. It is only because of these high doses of chemotherapy that millions of cancer patients are still alive. The idea behind using high doses of the drugs is to kill maximum cancer cells causing the least damage to the patients without being exposed to chemo combination or using very harsh chemo drugs.
In some cases, even the high doses of chemotherapy do not succeed. As per research, only 55% of the cancer patients have survived by taking high doses of the medication. The 45% of cancer patients have succumbed to the disease and died. In these cases, the cancer patients had almost become chemo-resistant after using large doses as well as its combination. Chemotherapy survival depends on plenty of factors such as type of chemotherapy, type of cancer, patient prognosis and stage of the cancer.
Because of this, doctors have found a new method to destroy the cancer cells using chemotherapy. They have discovered that instead of giving high doses to the patients, reducing the quantity of the dose can bring the desired results. This kind of treatment is a bit time consuming but it works. This kind of treatment is a good option if the high doses of chemotherapy fail to work.
Many people do not believe that low doses of chemotherapy would work if high doses fail. This seems to be logically correct as the cancer cells become resistant to chemotherapy so even the low doses should not work if such is the case. However, the low doses of chemotherapy are not meant to kill the cancer cells. They rather attack the capillaries of these cancer cells, which aid in the nourishment of these cells or tumors. The process would take some time for chemotherapy to destroy the capillaries and weaken the cancer cells. Once the cancer cells become weak, it is easy to destroy them with the help of chemo doses of chemotherapy combination.
The low dose chemotherapy works in two ways; it first reduces the capillaries that helps to strengthen the cancer cells and eventually destroys the cancer cells or tumor owing to weak capillaries. Sequential low dose chemotherapy is a completely new method of chemotherapy to treat cancer.
Low doses of chemotherapy are quite beneficial among cancer patients as they drastically reduce the side effects coming from the disease. In most cases, there are minimum or no side effects during low dose chemotherapy. There is also less toxicity on the white blood cells and so patients do not show any symptoms of vomiting or nausea during the treatment.
Sequential low doses of chemotherapy should be combined with antiangiogenic drugs to remove the cancer completely because it has been observed in most cases that the high or low doses of chemotherapy, even though effective to destroy the cancer cells, cannot completely eradicate the disease, as in most cases the cancer or tumor does come back. This is because a few capillaries remain alive resulting into the spread of the disease. You can also think of changing the chemotherapy agents in a period of 2-3 week to remove the cancer cells and the tumor completely.
