Many different treatment methods are available to treat thyroid cancer effectively.

People suffering from thyroid cancer do not need to worry about getting the best treatment as there are several options of treatment for cancer of this type. Thyroid cancer is treated using radioactive iodine, hormone treatment, surgery and external radiation treatment depending on the cancer type. There are some patients who are suggested to take combination of different treatments. Before opting for any treatment options for cancer, a person should consult with the doctor and discuss the effectiveness of the treatment and results.

Chemotherapy

In this kind of treatment for thyroid cancer, a few drugs are used to kill the cancer cells or stop the growth of those cancer cells. It is one of the common cancer treatment methods used by many doctors to treat cancer. It is the most favored treatment options for thyroid cancer. It is taken either by mouth or is injected into a muscle. When taken through injection,  drugs directly enter to the person’s bloodstream and try to kill the cancer cells. Chemotherapy treatment is given to the patient depending on the type of cancer he or she is suffering from. The effectiveness of this kind of therapy is great and gives the best results in the treatment of cancer of this type. Drugs provided through chemotherapy greatly affect the cancer cells and try to destroy them.

Radioactive Iodine Therapy

Radioactive iodine therapy is another useful cancer therapy used to treat thyroid cancer. It makes use of radioactive iodine to kill the thyroid cancer cells in the body. This therapy is provided to the patient  in a small dose by mouth. It does not cause any issue though the patient taking this therapy is allergic to iodine, as the intestine absorbs the iodine that flows through the person’s bloodstream and collects it in the thyroid cells. If the thyroid cancer cells remain in side the neck and  spread to the other parts of the body then they are killed by this iodine therapy. Radioactive iodine treatment for thyroid cancer is one of the efficient treatment methods used in the treatment thyroid cancer. If the dose of this treatment is very high then the doctor can prevent others from radiation exposure by keeping the patient away from other people during this kind of cancer treatment. Most of the radiation goes within some days. One can only notice few traces of radioactive iodine in the body after the completion of the treatment.

Surgery: It is the most common treatment methods used for the treatment of thyroid cancer. Your surgeon can remove a part of the thyroid cancer through surgery. There are many people who prefer doing surgery for the treatment of thyroid cancer. Your doctor will suggest the surgery after determining the size of the nodule, age of the patient and the type of cancer. There are two major types of surgeries usually preferred by the oncologists for the treatment of thyroid cancer. These are:

  • Total Thyroidectomy: Surgery that is used for removing the entire thyroid is known as total thyroidectomy. In this method, the surgeon removes the thyroid completely, through an incision in the neck. The surgeon also removes the nearby lymph nodes. If the cancer cells are found in the lymph nodes, pathologist tells that the disease has spread to other parts of his or her body. Surgeon can remove the other tissues in the neck, which gets affected by the thyroid cancer in very few cases. Patients also get radioactive iodine treatment after undergoing thyroidectomy if it has not worked effectively. In a few cases, external radiation therapy is also suggested after thyroidectomy.
  • Lobectomy: A few patients suffering from follicular thyroid cancer can be suggested to undergo Lobectomy. In this kind of treatment, lobe with cancerous nodule is removed. The nearby lymph nodes are also removed.

Several treatment options are available in the form of different therapies to treat thyroid cancer. The doctor suggests the appropriate treatment option depending on the type and stage of cancer and ensures that the patient understands clearly as to what the treatment consists of and how effective it could be.
